Don't go blind, monitor your glucose!


If you recently received lab work, you may have seen the blood glucose test. This lab is also commonly referred to as blood sugar. If you do not have diabetes, this lab should stay in a healthy range no matter what you ate, or how active you were. It is important to routinely monitor this lab because untreated diabetes can cause heart attacks, strokes, nerve damage, kidney disease, blindness, amputation of a limb, and can even increase the chances of being diagnosed with dementia. No one wants to deal with the complications of untreated diabetes, so how do we maintain a healthy blood glucose level?

What can make my blood glucose rise?

  • Too much food - especially monitor carbohydrate intake

  • Not being active

  • Side effects from medications and/or not enough insulin or oral diabetes medications

  • Illness, stress, and pain– your body releases hormones to fight the illness, stress and pain, and those hormones raise blood glucose levels

  • Dehydration

What can make my blood glucose fall?

  • Not eating enough food

  • Drinking alcohol on an empty stomach

  • Side effects from other medications and/or too much insulin or oral diabetes medications

  • More physical activity or exercise than usual – physical activity makes your body more sensitive to insulin and can lower blood glucose.

How can I track my blood glucose?

There are two ways to keep track of your blood glucose levels:

  • Use a blood glucose meter to measure your blood glucose level at that moment. It would be a good idea to get a couple of readings to see your blood glucose trends.

  • Get an A1C at least twice a year to find out your average blood glucose for the past 2 to 3 months

Going into the holiday season, you may be surrounded by lots of delicious desserts, but please think about your blood glucose and do not overindulge!
