Stop Stressing and Enjoy the Holidays!


We are told this is the most wonderful time of the year!

Unfortunately, the holiday season is usually filled with lots of stress. Our days are busy with completing our to do lists, and we aren’t able to fully enjoy the holidays. This may be the first year without a loved one, and the holiday traditions and rituals may be changing. You might also be spending the holidays away from family and friends and feel isolated and lonely. We may also have unrealistic expectations because we live in a society where everyone post pictures of their “perfect” holiday.

So how do we make sure that our holidays are the best they can be?

  • Try something new. Your family may have changed and grown, and not everyone can get together this year. Consider a vacation with a family member or friend. 

  • Volunteer your time to help others. Spending time with those in need can help you feel less isolated.  

  • Try to appreciate the good things you have now instead of focusing on the past. 

  • Stay active. Go for a family walk after dinner if weather allows, or spend an afternoon window shopping. 

  • Accept feelings of sadness or loneliness. These feelings may not go away just because it's the holidays. 

  • Don’t feel like you need to do everything. Delegate some of the responsibilities.

  • Stick to your budgets. Consider giving homemade gifts or donate to a charity under someone’s name.

  • Get help if you need it. Despite your best efforts you may feel persistently sad or anxious and be unable to sleep or do daily chores. Don't be embarrassed to ask for help any time of the year.

If you are finding that you aren’t enjoying the holidays, take time to look into what is causing you stress and depression during this time. Hopefully, with some planning, you can have a holiday that you enjoy and look forward to.
